One of the oldest forms of magic used by Magi, an alchemist is able to take the plants found in the world and tap into their magical properties, making them more potent until they make a highly effective potion, elixir or tincture.

The nature world is heavily infused with magic to the point where even the Norms notice the magical effects of some plants, though their inability to properly manipulate and extract these properties means that their use amongst Norms is highly debated. Our Alchemy Master teaches Flamel students how to properly identify such flora, what properties they possess, and how to concentrate that down for use in potion making.

 

But plants are not the only place where magic can be found. It has been discovered that magical energy (known in its generalised term as 'essentia') is present in most objects and creatures, all with characteristics that relate to the item or creature which it is contained within. We teach our potion makers how to extract this essentia and identify which Aspect (or 'flavour') it is. Our Alchemy Master will then assist them in crystallising this essentia so that it can be used in potion making.

 

There are limitations and risks relating to essentia extraction, which we teach our potion students early into their studies to help them correctly use their skills.

 

Potion making has, until recently, been an incredibly vague and chaotic art. The Flamel Academy aims to bring order to this chaos and determine the precise recipes and effects for various potions. While there are several prescribed recipes we teach our students, we also assist them in the research of new and exciting mixtures.
